Why You Should Start Meditating Today — It Saved My Life!

Being a young adult comes with its own perks and the energy to do, consume and sleep whenever and whatever you want. Once you start getting them until adulthood, those perks begin to perish along with your unlimited energy. As a young adult in college, I never saw the end of my energy coming to an end. I could go a maximum of 48 hours without sleep, all while consuming alcohol, getting up the next day, going to class, studying, going to work, an 8–12 hour shift. I could also consume two pizzas in one day along with countless snacks, candy, and ice cream buckets to watch a single movie. I was unaware that soon I could face consequences for my actions. That unhealthy lifestyle led me to severe anxiety attacks, eczema breakouts, and losing my hair so much I eventually decided to shave it all off and be bald forever.
When I finally decided it was time for a change, I was on my first annual physical after receiving medical insurance from my job. I went to my doctor’s office and they hooked me to all types of machines, drew blood, poked, touched around, and then they left the room, leaving me in my robe; she came back running 5 minutes later and said “Hey you need to go NOW, to the hospital… You are about to have a heart attack” Panicked and my heart racing 1000mph I replied “There’s no way, what did you just say” my eyes widen like a scared puppy. “Go now, to the emergency room you’re going to be fine take a deep breath and go” I got in my car, called work, and let them know I wasn’t coming back to end my shift. I then called my mother and told her what hospital I was going to be going to and what the doctor had just said. When I arrived they immediately hooked me up to a machine to monitor my heart for about 5 hours, took x-rays of my heart, and the doctor came back in and said “You just have an irregular heartbeat nothing to worry about, or have you stay overnight for. You need to just need to Relax” She gave me what looked like some graphs and told me to show them next time I go to a doctor’s office so they don’t freak out like they did that day.

That same night I went home and looked up how to relax naturally and I had always heard to breathe in or go outside and walk in the sun. But I never knew there were meditation apps, or even what meditation meant. The first time I tried it was that same night. I felt like I was floating on my bed! I looked up this feeling while meditating and it causes some people because you’ve finally slowed your thoughts racing through your mind and become present at the moment. I was hooked. It took me months to finally be able to get to that meditative state, slow my breathing and thoughts together, and just be present for the moment, the results are instant though. A list of the greatest apps I have found on my journey is below. I’ve also utilized YouTube videos for calming frequencies, binaural beats, and guided meditations. I recommend you also pair meditations with journaling there are tons of apps to use for this just depends on your liking and preference of using the user interface. I personally use Notion to journal invite you to take a look at these apps and start meditating today it might just save your life as well.
